A dining room should feel just as memorable as the gatherings it hosts. For this home in Easton, Connecticut, we designed a contemporary space enveloped in bold floral hand-painted Japanese rice paper with unmistakable character while complementing the home’s contemporary architecture.
FEATURED: Aspire Design and Home, Wall Street Journal
We began with Porter Teleo’s hand-painted Japanese rice paper wallpaper in Patales, customizing the color palette specifically for the room. Inspired by bold watercolors and florals, the expressive wallcovering layers black, warm browns, taupe, rust, blush, and pink into a composition that transforms the dining room into an immersive work of art.
From there, we layered in mid-century modern furnishings, including a custom dining table and chairs, to balance the expressive wallcovering while maintaining continuity with the rest of the home’s contemporary interiors. A sculptural modern pendant crafted from ostrich eggs echoes the wallpaper’s organic forms, adding structure, dimension, contrast, and a dramatic focal point overhead.
The result is a dining room that feels distinctive without sacrificing comfort. It is a space designed for everything from everyday family dinners to celebrations that linger long after the meal is over.
